class=\"kt-inside-inner-col\"><p>Sometimes, an autoimmune disease may also have a <strong>hereditary cause<\/strong> or a <strong>genetic predisposition<\/strong>, which can develop into a disease following <strong>triggering events <\/strong>such as excessive stress, exposure to medications or bacterial and viral agents, an unbalanced diet, or exposure to cigarette smoke.<\/p>\n\n<p>In terms of prevention, being aware of the presence or absence of a <strong>genetic predisposition<\/strong> can certainly be helpful in gaining greater awareness and a more comprehensive perspective.<\/p>\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28445677\/\">multicenter international study<\/a>, led by Italian researcher Maristella Steri and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, highlighted that an alteration in the <strong>TNFSF13B gene<\/strong> (known as <strong>BAFF-var<\/strong>) is associated with an increased risk\u2014approximately <strong>1.5 times higher<\/strong>\u2014of developing autoimmune diseases.<\/p>\n\n<p>In particular, BAFF-var leads to a significant increase in the levels of <strong>B-cell Activating Factor<\/strong> (BAFF), an inflammatory substance that, in turn, keeps the immune system &#8220;overactive.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>BAFF is a cytokine, a protein released by the body that serves as an indicator of systemic inflammatory processes.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20353497\/\">The relationship between BAFF and diet <\/a>is both significant and well-documented. The repeated consumption of the same food stimulus can, by itself, lead to an increased production of BAFF.<\/p>\n\n<p>For this reason, identifying which <strong>foods are consumed in excess<\/strong> and adjusting their intake\u2014based on individual genetic predisposition\u2014can be an innovative strategy to help regulate even some less favorable inherited genes.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <a
